New Burn ward in SMS Hospital Jaipur

New Burn ward saved 10 % lives and still there is the scope for much improvement.

Within a month of the inauguration of the 38-bedded air-conditioned burn ward, around 10 % of deaths have decreased. However, the burn ICU is still closed due to lack of facilities. According to the doctors, ICU and Skin bank facilities need to be increased quickly to reduce the percentage of deaths even more. In the old ward, there were 50 beds in place of 30 and there was a lack of space and dearth of fresh air, which caused inflammations in the burnt victims and caused them their lives.

ICU – A new burn ward has been built with the donators support but the hospital administration would have to buy ventilators and other equipment for the ICU. In this way, 50 % of cases can be saved.

Skin Bank – After the first skin transplant, the medical minister Mr. Rathor has given instructions to start the skin bank. Some initial work was done for the same but then it was stopped in the files.

According to Dr. Rakesh Jain, unit head, plastic surgery department, if the skin bank is developed then the cadaver skin can be preserved and around 60 to 70 % patients can be saved.

Infection – Any burnt case is brought from the emergency to the ward in simple trolleys. There is more infection in hospitals than outside. So special trolleys are required to deport them to the ward. These trolleys are covered with autoclave sheet from all sides.
