The brain surgery which requires 8 units of blood didn't need a single unit as the operation was done through the nose by endoscopy at SMS
This was one of the first kind of case where the neurosurgeons were operating on a tumor which had grown from nose to the brain. This was seen live by more than 400 national and international doctors live. The surgery started at 9.30 am in the morning and continued till 9 pm at night. Total of five surgeries were done.
Dr. Henry Shoder from Germany and Dr. Satish Jain, ENT specialist performed this surgery with a team of doctors. As endoscopy was used in this surgery the patient had no blood loss. Around 7 to 8 units of blood had to be transfused but not a single was required. This will have very fewer chances of infection in the patient. This type of operation would require a very less hospital stay for the patient and also costs less.
Also, Dr. VD Sinha and Dr. Sniderman performed Codoma tumor operations along with Dr. Achal, Dr. Kapil Sikka, and Dr. Rajeev.
Many junior doctors also took training on this new technique. This happened at the 18th annual conference of skill based surgery society of India's surgery workshop.
ENT surgeon Dr. Nidhi from SMS hospital shared that this workshop's purpose is to train about Endoscopy surgery and motivate doctors to perform the same. The doctors will reach research papers on Saturday and Sunday.
International doctors performed live surgery for the first time at SMS hospital. Doctors from USA, Germany, Japan, Mexico, Italy, Nepal and Russia participated in this workshop. This was the first workshop of neurosurgeon and ENT which had a live surgery performed by national and international doctors and watched by more than 400 doctors.
