Dr Ashwini Parashar SMS hospital Team is working for poor
After being taunted these medical students became friends of the poor
This happened on 18 June 2016 when a patient who came to SMS hospital for his cure said to Medical student Dr. Ashwini Parashar that doctors are only interested in making money. There are strikes happening here regularly but no one sees the poor patients lying on the hospital floor.
Dr. Ashwini thought of changing this thought process from people's minds and started distributing clothes and first aid medicines to people sleeping on footpaths at night. Ashwini along with Himanshu Sain, Saurabh Gupta, Jai Gupta, Piyush Sharma, Mohit Tejwani, Shubham Soni, Rajeshwari Singh, Kirti Gera, Ayushi Mittal, Devyanshi Jain, Ekta Meena, Silky Das, Gunjan Sharma, Anju Choudhary and 28 more students joined in this deed.
They also give free medicines to those who are sick. Around 100 students of 15 colleges have joined this campaign. The MBBS students told about this in various colleges to administration and students and motivated them to start it at their own level. This campaign is known as clothing donation drive - cloth the city. Most students are around 20-22 years of age. This was published on WhatsApp group and students from Delhi, Ajmer, Kota, Jhalawad, Udaipur, Bikaner, Indore, Lucknow, Gorakhpur have also joined hands in this campaign.

Critical operation at SMS Hospital Jaipur
The doctors at SMS hospital saved the life of a man by taking out his stomach, pancreas, spleen and a part of large intestine. This operation went on for 8 hours. It was a risky operation since the patient had cancer. That is why all these parts had to be taken out together. The patient was bleeding daily and two unit blood was transfused in him monthly. Around 70 units blood had been transfused in the past 3 years.
If the parts were not taken out then bleeding wouldn't have stopped and the patient would have died. Brijesh Sharma 54, from Bharatpur, was diagnosed with cancer 3 years back. Slowly the tumor spread to other places. It spread from stomach to pancreas to spleen to large intestine. Dr. Sandeep Jasuja at SMS hospital gave him chemotherapy which helped in reduction of the tumor but bleeding didn't stop. Brijesh kept losing his weight and hemoglobin. He had to transfuse blood each month. The patient was shown by his family members at the gastro department where Dr. Ajay Sharma got a CT scan of the patient and then the operation was decided.
SMS Hospital Jaipur |
His stomach was taken out 75% Pancreas was taken out 75% spleen was taken out completely and big intestine was taken out 30 percent.
Why is this operation so important :
- If a single mistake was occurred the patient would have bled and his blood was already very low.
- Taking out 4 important parts together was a challenge.
- The patient had cancer and this would give respite to him from chemotherapy.
- This paved the way for such patients in future.

Dr Anil Sharma of SMS Cardiothoracic and vascular surgery
There would be just one cut to change heart valve and recovery time and cost would be less too
Dr. Anil Sharma of SMS Cardiothoracic and vascular surgery has the purpose of performing mini-thoracotomy open heart surgery to cure the problems of bad valves in the heart. This thesis of Dr Anil has been published in heart India of April- June 2016 edition. He also purports that SMS hospital is the first hospital in the country where valves are being transplanted with minute 5 to 6 mm cuts. He has successfully performed 4 surgeries in last 4 months.
Dr. US Agarwal of SMS medical college shared that Dr. Sharma has developed a technique of minute cut instead of femoral-femoral bypass surgery.
At present in normal surgery, there are cuts in three places and a cut of 9 to 10 cm. There is a cut in the leg of about 10 cms which can close the limb artery or cause limb ischemia. In many countries like America, England, France etc surgeons are performing surgery with cuts in three places.
Mini-thoracotomy technique -
This is a valve repair technique with minute cuts. A minute cut is placed on right side of the patient chest and there is no need for blood transfusion or any danger to the leg. Recovery is quick and the cost is also less. It takes two to three hours to change one valve.
Rajwanti from Kota 36 years and laadkanwar from Nagpur had leak and shrinkage in both valves, Surendra from Jhunjunu had leak and shrinkage in aortic valve and Sunil from Kaner had both valves faulty. All these people got their lives back through mini-thoracotomy technique.
SMS hospital starts trial run for liver transplant
SMS hospital starts trial run for liver transplant
Trial run for liver transplant has commenced in SMS hospital. Gastro surgery is conducted in the newly built operation theater for transplant purposes. Since BJP government formation the liver transplant has been purported at SMS.

SMS Professors will act as caretakers os Medcial college students
senior professors and professors would act as caretakers of final year and pre-final year students
Many doctors and professors have come forward for a positive start to make the environment stress free for students at SMS medical college. Now senior professors and professors would act as caretakers of final year and pre-final year students. Teachers will look into students matters from attendance to personal life and will try to provide whatever help they can. This step has been taken to reduce stress among students and increase the quality of their results. At present, the teachers have taken up the responsibility of 400 students at SMS medical college. The teachers would attend to a group of 35 students respectively and keep an eye on their activities. If a student has low attendance then they would be mentored about the situation after knowing the reason. If any student has social, family or financial difficulty then the teachers would try to help them for the same. If any student has problems regarding books or course then also they would be able to discuss it directly with their teachers.
Why as this started?
The attendance of many students was coming very low. This was creating a rift between students and teachers. Many students were in a depression. Therefore a meeting was conducted under the guidance of college principal and his decision of teachers becoming caretakers of students was taken.
Patients will also be benefited
The college administration feels that after this decision not only the problems of students will be lessened but also they would develop better skills. After some time this positive approach would help them to give a better response to the patients.
Dr. U.S Agarwal, principal SMS Medical college added that students remain in depression due to many reasons. Sometimes they cannot open up and it affects their results. Also, many students lose attendance because of their problems. At present, we plan to cover final and pre-final year students but in future, we would try to appoint caretakers for all students. If other colleges also start this step it can be very beneficial.

New Burn ward in SMS Hospital Jaipur
New Burn
ward saved 10 % lives and still there is the scope
for much improvement.
Within a
month of the inauguration of the 38-bedded air-conditioned burn ward, around 10
% of deaths have decreased. However, the burn ICU is still closed due to lack
of facilities. According to the doctors,
ICU and Skin bank facilities need to be increased quickly to reduce the
percentage of deaths even more. In the old ward, there were 50 beds in place of
30 and there was a lack of space and
dearth of fresh air, which caused inflammations in the burnt victims and caused
them their lives.
New Burn ward in SMS Hospital Jaipur |
ICU – A new
burn ward has been built with the donators support but the hospital
administration would have to buy ventilators and other equipment for the ICU. In this way, 50 % of cases can be saved.
Skin Bank –
After the first skin transplant, the
medical minister Mr. Rathor has given instructions to start the skin bank. Some
initial work was done for the same but then it was stopped in the files.
According to Dr. Rakesh Jain, unit head, plastic surgery department, if the
skin bank is developed then the cadaver
skin can be preserved and around 60 to 70 % patients can be saved.
Infection – Any
burnt case is brought from the emergency to the ward in simple trolleys. There
is more infection in hospitals than outside. So special trolleys are required
to deport them to the ward. These trolleys are covered with autoclave sheet
from all sides.

Liver Transplant facility delayed in SMS Hospital Jaipur
Liver Transplant facility will not be available even until March-
Not even one fourth of the work has been completed at SMS hospital’s post care unit.
At one side, liver transplants are being performed in private hospitals and health care units while the facility of Liver and Heart transplant has been delayed at SMS hospital due to incomplete work. In September 2015, the transplant facility at SMS hospital was foreseen to be started by December 2015 but the work is still not completed. ILBS team of Delhi was involved in the work progress for the same still there seem no chances for the facility of Liver transplant to start even by March 2016 at SMS.
The post care unit work should have been completed by January 2016 but not even one fourth of the work was completed by 14 February. The responsibility for this project was given to many officials but without proper and timely surveys of work in progress and the inability of contractors to finish on time has lengthened the process. The post care work will need at least one month to be completed and that means that Liver transplant facility will not start by March 2016.

Brain Angioplasty Jaipur India SMS Hospital
Brain Angioplasty Jaipur India, brain angioplasty SMS Hospital Jaipur, SMS Dr Team - Dr. S.K Jain, Dr. Trilochan Srivastava, Dr. Ashok, Dr. Saurbah Purohit, and Dr. Mamta Sharma
Brain Angioplasty performed for the first time in State. Doctors put a stent in the middle cerebral artery, which makes the blood flow in the brain. After this successful procedure, Jaipur has become one the top most cities to provide such a facility. The patient used to suffer Paralysis attacks four times a day. The doctors cured his pain in 4 hours.
The state’s doctors have performed brain angioplasty successfully for the first time. This operation was performed at SMS hospital in Jaipur. The surgery went on for 4 hours and was complicated, as a stent had to be put in the cerebral artery. This success is also important, as Jaipur has come in the list of successful cities like Delhi, Chennai, and Bangalore where such surgeries are performed.
Brain Angioplasty Jaipur India SMS Hospital |
Five doctors performed the four-hour surgery successfully-
Before the operation, the patient Rajan T aged 55 used to get 3 to 4 paralytic attacks in a day. The cerebral artery of the brain is about 2.5 mm in diameter but Rajan’s artery was shrunk to about 90%. Since the blood could not reach the brain properly, he used to suffer from paralytic attacks. The doctors had put a microwire inside his cerebral artery to check the condition through Transfemoral catheter. The artery was widened by a balloon before this. When the stents ballooned up then stenting was performed by the microcatheter. This procedure took 4 hours to complete. The operation was performed on 21 January. Rajan is now recovering and will be discharged soon. The surgery team consisted of Dr. S.K Jain, Dr. Trilochan Srivastava, Dr. Ashok, Dr. Saurbah Purohit, and Dr. Mamta Sharma.
Dangers – If the surgery was not performed then the patient could have lost his voice and a paralysis attack as the artery could have been blocked fully.
Positives – The brain angioplasty cost around two lakhs at SMS hospital. The patients had to go to AIIMS Delhi or PGI Chandigarh earlier for the surgery. The government hospitals there also cost around the same but the cost of staying amounted to 50 to 60 thousand rupees.
According to Dr. S.K Jain around 10 such cases are seen at SMS hospital alone each month. After the success of this surgery, the next surgeries of patients would become easier. Earlier more than 100 such patients had to go to other cities for such procedure each year.
